Not only are we in the final stretch of our second year of public school, we’re in the final stretch of our second year in a Title 1 school where my kids make up the 1% of children not on assistance, not at risk and not of color.
My heart beats wildly for my kids’ schools and the kids and administration that attend and work there.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a 2 hour Parenting Partners’ Workshop led by our school’s social worker. Parenting Partners is a program put out by the US Department of Education and it is focused on setting up parents for success in the home. The program teaches discipline techniques and ways to build self esteem into children while providing a place for struggling parents to open up about their failures, their concerns and their hopes for their children.
It was an amazing experience that only fueled my desire to serve my community school with more compassion, more understanding and more of me.
There are 16 million children living in poverty in America and of those 16 million children, nearly every one of them will attend a poor performing, under resourced public school that will fall short of preparing these children for a successful future.
Our public school system is failing an entire generation of children.
And if I can be quite honest with you, so is the Church.
Because you guys have a heart to love your people and your places with wild abandon, on Monday, February 15, I’ll host an online book club on Facebook for the book Educating All God’s Children .
This book club is for every follower of Jesus, no matter how or where we choose to school our children. It’s a book woven together with personal experiences, national statistics, biblical teaching, educational theory and a compelling call for the Church to be the church in our public schools. It’s a book chock full of information that is easy to swallow and even easier to put into practice. I could not put it down.
If you’d like to join in the conversation and read the book in community with other like-minded people, I encourage you to sign up! This is a low commitment sort of book club where I’ll post questions on Monday, pertaining to the chapters we’re reading that week, and you can either lurk around and read the comments of others or leave your own thoughts.
Think of our group as a safe place to gather information, share information and experiences and ask hard questions. We’re in this together and grace abounds.
If you’d like to join in, let me know in the comments. I’ll friend you on Facebook and then add you to the group. We’ll be using the hashtags #onethingrightnow and #educatingallgodschildren on social media.
Grateful we get to run alongside one another, y’all. It’s so fun to learn to love better with the likes of you.
