I woke this morning to nervous uncertainty. I dressed the kids, made beds, and brewed coffee in a wild rush, my eyes never leaving the clock. As time ticked by, I ran a quick dust rag over the coffee table and swished the toilet clean one more time.
At 9:40, the front door swung open. And it continued to swing open, nonstop, until 10:45. Laughter and smiles filled our home…and so did teenagers. (Thank you Lord for those teenagers. They added so much life to our normally quiet crowd.) Coffee and danishes filled tummies and baked cookies were bagged to give away. As our home filled with old faces and new faces, one thing was clear:
We had prayed and God had answered. And we responded with thanksgiving.
In the mid-morning sun, we knocked on doors and passed out cookies. We put names with faces and prayed over every home that allowed us to do so. We peeked through cracked open doors and made mental notes of things we could do to bless our neighbors. Diapers for a baby, food for a hungry family, gift cards for gas for the single mom who has a new job out of town, new bicycle tires for kids’ bikes, visits that need to be made with lonely men and women. The list goes on and on and the best part is we get to live here and do the blessing in the name of Christ.
As I ponder our call here to Rocky Mount, I sense a calming in my spirit. This is where the Lord has called us and I know it.
May the name of Christ and the love shown by the church in His name, open the door to the transformation that needs to happen all over our city.
And again, I ask you, Join Us? Join us by loving your neighbor and transforming our city one household at a time.
