It hurts when the Lord has to pry something from our hands! Corrie Ten Boom
A childhood friend reminded me of this truth today. Even when I believe that I have held both hands open wide, He is still plucking things from them that don’t belong. Like splinters, stuck just below the skin, that are a constant source of discomfort. These splinters are always there, but they stay hidden until something rubs them the wrong way. When rubbed the wrong way, they really hurt!
How do I open both hands and release all that I have held on to? How can I invite the Lord to pluck things from my hands when I know it will hurt?!
Plucking splinters is tedious work, but the Lord is gentle and patient. With eyes closed, I trust Him to remove what He sees fit. He sees how deep the the wound is and he knows how long it will take to remove all the fragments. He is diligent and thorough and the plucking is less painful when I open wide my palms and sit still.
But tonight, my hands are clinched tightly, and the Lord’s prying is quite painful. This spinter is a deep one and I know the pain is sure to come.
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.”
