Our annual Easter picture…without Daddy!
I always dread the family photo opportunities that normal families look forward to. As you can see, everyone is smiling and they are neatly dressed. But what you don’t see are the pictures that were taken before and after this one. The one where Josiah is crying because the sun is in his eyes. The one where Ainsley is being squeezed in the middle. The one where Elliana’s panties are showing or even the one where sweet little Isaac is being ugly to Audrey-shocking, I know. But I dread trying to capture these precious moments the most because my ugliness really comes out when I am behind the camera. The amazing thing is that despite my ugliness, the Lord can produce something beautiful.
We got up this morning to a temperature of 39. Thad left early to meet his team and to fill the horse trough for the baptism while I stayed home to dress the children and wait for the temperature to warm a little. The kids and I left about 10:00 and got to the park to enjoy some coffee and donuts. The sky was clear and beautiful and the kids were giddy with excitement to hunt eggs and finally move church out of our home for a week. Volunteers gathered with fried chicken, ham, potato salad, rolls, banana pudding, and cupcakes and we waited for an unknown number of folks to celebrate a baptism.
We gathered this morning to celebrate Troy Price’s decision to follow Christ in baptism. Troy works with Thad at Freedom Industries and he is a new believer. He joined Thad’s Life Transformation Group a few months ago and after reading Colossians for one week, Troy decided he needed to be baptized. Thad whole-heartedly agreed and the plans for today’s gathering began.
The Lord is drawing others to Himself and to the work He has begun in Rocky Mount. We are excited to see the team the Lord is building and to see how we will function as a team. Please pray that the Lord will knit our hearts together as we learn to live life together. Sharing each others’ lives is messy and humbling, but is also a huge blessing.

Our first gathering was not picture perfect. We sung off-key, the children cried and ran off during the baptism, fire ants were in attack mode, and we had people from all different walks of life trying to celebrate the same thing in different ways. We did not have any flowers around the plastic horse trough, the picnic tables were dirty, the city trash guy came to dump the trash at the beginning of our service, and of course we had Thad. (ha, ha, he only preached for 10 minutes). But at the end of the day, it was beautiful. God turned our humble attempt into a glorious occasion. We got a glimpse of the work that the Lord has begun in Rocky Mount and it is more about disciple making than just a church service.
It’s a good thing the Lord is in the business of turning our ugly into something beautiful.
